Background of the Study
Climate change poses a significant threat to global food security and nutrition, particularly in regions heavily dependent on agriculture. Rising temperatures, unpredictable rainfall patterns, desertification, and extreme weather events reduce agricultural productivity, affecting food availability and accessibility. These climatic changes contribute to food shortages, increased food prices, and malnutrition, especially in vulnerable populations.
Adamawa State, located in northeastern Nigeria, is experiencing the effects of climate change, including droughts, floods, and soil degradation. Many communities in the state rely on subsistence farming, and adverse weather conditions have led to declining crop yields and food insecurity. Poor food production exacerbates malnutrition, particularly among children and pregnant women. Understanding the impact of climate change on food security and nutrition is essential for developing sustainable agricultural and food policies.
Statement of the Problem
Climate change is worsening food insecurity in Adamawa State by affecting agricultural productivity and food supply. Many farming households face reduced crop yields, livestock losses, and increased food prices, leading to inadequate nutrition. Despite the growing concerns over climate change and food security, there is limited research specifically addressing the nutritional implications of climate change in Adamawa State. This study aims to evaluate the extent of climate change impacts on food security and propose adaptive strategies.
Objectives of the Study
To assess the impact of climate change on food production and availability in Adamawa State.
To examine the relationship between climate change and malnutrition in the region.
To recommend adaptive measures to enhance food security and nutrition.
Research Questions
How does climate change affect agricultural production in Adamawa State?
What are the nutritional consequences of food insecurity caused by climate change?
What strategies can mitigate the impact of climate change on food security?
Research Hypotheses
Climate change negatively affects food production in Adamawa State.
Food insecurity caused by climate change increases malnutrition rates.
Climate-resilient agricultural practices improve food security and nutrition.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study focuses on the impact of climate change on food security and nutrition in Adamawa State. Limitations include variations in climate patterns and reliance on self-reported agricultural data.
Definitions of Terms
Climate Change: Long-term alterations in temperature, precipitation, and weather patterns.
Food Security: The availability, accessibility, and utilization of sufficient and nutritious food.
Malnutrition: A condition resulting from inadequate or imbalanced nutrient intake.
Climate-Resilient Agriculture: Farming practices designed to adapt to changing climate conditions.
